Front Cover Second Draft

I more accurately cropped the top of the head, then smudging and blurring the edge to make it blend in more. I also moved the cover line around so that it goes over the models shoulder. Some of the text that was in white on the background didn't stand out so i added a slight drop shadow.

Front Cover First Draft

I tried my first draft just basically to see the layout and pick which colour from the masthead I should follow through to the main cover line. I am going to make my own barcode later on but used this one for now as like its design and the way the price is put in big bold writing and may match a colour from my mastead.

I decided that cyan was the best colour to carry through as it stood out enough to catch your attention but wasn't too bright and distracting. I am now going to do my second draft, perfecting the cropping of the head over the masthead and possibly changing the layout of the main cover line slightly.

Edited Photo Testers

After creating the Masthead and having a choice of good photos edited I wanted to try them together to see which looks best.

I think this one works really well but as the image is neither a close up or a full body shot it does look a bit out of place on the front cover.

I like both of these a lot and they are good as will appeal to my target audience of both male and female. However, I think as you cannot see the face closely it doesn't connect as much and will not draw the reader in.

These are also good and more effective than the full body shots as you can see the face close up and the eye contact will draw the reader in. However, as the photo is smiley and pretty it will appeal to a female audience but not so much to the rest of my target audience as the magazine is supposed to be unisex. I think that males are less likely to be drawn to the magazine with this image on the front.

I am going to use this image as it is close up and will connect with reader and is also not just going to attract a female audience as the expression is more quirky and fun, more interesting like a lot of music magazines.

Masthead design

I started off by doing a rough sketch of my design. The design is a mixture of the words Muso and Music as the name of the magazine is MUSO/MUSIC.

The U has a dot above the right side of it which makes it look like it could also be an i. Also the O at the end has a split which makes it look like it could be a C.

After this a traced over it in photoshop making a stencil of the lettering.

I had this idea to use the CMYK print colours in my masthead so decided to make each letter one of the colours. This is the finished title.

Photoshop editing of photos Photoshop Editing of photos

As I haven't yet decide which photo I am going to use I edited a few of the best on photoshop to see which I like best.
Firstly I added a Gaussian blur to the background to give an out of focus effect around the model. This also means that the model is in sharp focus and stands out more.

I also wanted to increase the contrast as the image looked quite flat I did this by using the Dodge and Burn tools. I used the burn to darken the darks and the dodge tool to lighten the lights.

I also used the spot healer tool and stamp tool to smoothen the skin.

Music Magazine Questionnaire

Music Magazine Front Cover Analysis

Moodboard

Slide 1 - Reference to the mixture of music and art. I want to have more than just music in the magazine. I also want to include what inspires musci including art.

Slide 2 - the idea of black and white with bright, bold colours. Also the idea of simplicity.

Slide 3 - My idea for using the print colours of C(cyan) M(magenta) Y(yellow) and K(key or black). Thes colours go realy well together and give the right feel to my magazine.

Slides 4-8 - Just ideas again of colour and imagery in the magazine. Colour mixed with black and white. Bright mixed with simplicity.

Slide 9 - These are ideas for the photography. I like the photo on the right and would like to do my photos in black and white, in this style.

Contents Page

After finishing this design I wa happy with everything apart from the 'contents' title. It was plain and didn't fot with ther design on the rest of the page. I decided to give it an effect, adding a ripped piece of papre and puttin the font as ALLSTAR like the rest of the titles.

This is my final design and I am happy with it as it continues on the design style of the front cover and looks fresh and clean.

Table of Contents Mock-Up

After doing this mock up I started to design my contents page and decided to make a few design changes. Instead of having the images as square boxed I removed their backgrounds, leaving them just floating on the page. I also decided to move the image in the bottom up slightly to balance out the page.

Mock-Up of School Magazine

Choosing main image

There is to much going on in the background, distracting attention away from the model.

It would be difficult to use this image as the bocks would take up alot of the left third and not follow the eyeflow as well.

I think that this image is too formal and will be much harder to relate to the target audience.

This image is good as it is mainly centred so is able to follow eyeline and also the pose is quite casual and friendly meaning the reader can relate to it.

School Magazine Comparison

I looked at two different school magazine and picked out what I did and didn't like about them. I also got to think about what I  would want to include on my own school magazine cover
